Whether backbending evokes fear, anxiety, anger, bliss, tears, vitality, or just a lot of sweat, most of us experience backbends with some degree of intensity. After all, backbending is heart opening; it is stimulating for the nervous system, and it makes us vulnerable. Backbends offer a counterbalance to our daily activities in forward flexion, going beyond familiar movement and outside our comfort zone. And yet, when approached with control and opening, there is a certain aliveness in these movements that invites the opportunity to find strength in our vulnerability. In this workshop, we will explore how we can access the chain of tissue that allows us to open into backbending with spaciousness. We will discuss some of the common obstacles or pain points, alignment, and some of the ways we may escape the opening in these poses. We will work on rooting our foundation and creating connection to safely start to open into backbends with breath, strength and trust. Students of all levels are welcome. Join us!
